今回は１９９６年に作成されたスコットランド、エディンバラを舞台にした、薬物中毒の若者たちの話です。私がむか～しバックパッカーとして、オセアニア圏を旅していたころ、現地の安宿で映画をよく見ていましたが、その中でもトレインスポッティングは群を抜いて英語圏出身の人からリクエストが多かったです。当時のオーストラリアはヘロインのようなハードな薬物が蔓延しており、ヘロイン中毒の人たちが、町中にごろごろしていましたので、そういった時代背景もあってこの映画は当時の若者に受けたのだと思います。
今回の舞台エジンバラは昔お世話になりました。渡航前、当時はこの映画をカセットテープにダビングして血の滲むようなシャドーイングをしたと思います。なにせ訛りが手加減なしですから。いいんだか悪いんだか現地でヘロイン等のせっかく覚えたフレーズを使う機会はゼロ。
２０１７年にトレインスポッティングは続編も作られたので、今回はそちらも視聴しました。トレインスポッティングファンとしては全体外せない内容で、第1作へのオマージュがいたるところに出てきます。続編では薬物がメインと言うよりも彼らのその後の人生のハードシップが主に描かれています。初回を見ていない方には全くお勧めできない内容です。
本編の中の登場人物で特に暴力大好きなベグビーと重度ヤク中のスパッドは筋金入りのスコットランド人ということでリスニング難易度S級です。
