メルギブソン主演のスコットランドを舞台にした映画。メルギブソンはオーストラリア出身ですが、アメリカにずっと住んでいるのか、劇中のスコットランドアクセントについてイギリスネイティブたちから酷評されていました。しかし、彼の英語が一番わかりやすいので、こてこてのスコッツやアイリッシュに囲まれる中での彼の発音は私にとってのオアシスのような存在です。１３世紀イギリス内を支配していたイングランドのエドワード１世の横暴に対して平民のスコットランド人たちがたちあがり、イングランドをぎゃふんといわせるストーリーで、憎きイングランド対正義のスコットランドという構図が分かりやすい。しかしイギリス人の友人曰くフェアじゃないそうです。約3時間もある長編映画ですが、約半分が戦場を描いているので、自身のオスの戦闘DNAがかきたてられる思いです。日々の日常生活は平和すぎてこの戦闘欲求は筋トレに昇華させまう！
