ある公爵夫人の生涯は 2008年のイギリス・アメリカ合作映画。
”若くして名門貴族のテヴォンシャー公爵のもとに嫁いだジョージアナ・スペンサー。不幸な結婚生活の末、スキャンダラスな人生を送った公爵夫人の数奇な運命を語る”と紹介されていますが、旦那が不倫をかさね愛想をつかして妻も愛人をつくるが、子供を優先して離婚しない話です。どこが数奇な運命? 近年の芸能人不倫のワイドショーで毒された当方には消化不良です。
今の時代背景では以下の行為は横暴以外の何ものでもないのですが、この映画の舞台18世紀後半の英国貴族階級ではよくあったことなのかもしれません。しかも実話に基づいています。
①妻のいる屋敷で複数の愛人と関係を持つ。
②妻に暴力をふるい性行為をする
③妻の友人を寝取り愛人として同じ家に住まわせる
④妻の愛人を自分の権力を使って徹底的に排除する
⑤女の子が生まれると見向きもせず、ひたすら男の子の誕生を望む

そのような夫を演じるのはシンドラーのリストで冷酷非情な将校で無数のユダヤ人たちを虐殺したレイフ・ファインズ。これらの点からも最低な人物像になりがちですが、抑制の効いた演技と表情で底辺のわずか1ミリ手前に踏みとどまっていて非常に難しい役どころだったと思います。最後は丸く収めています。
