1884年のスーダンを舞台に、A.E.W.メイソンの小説を映画化したこの5作目の作品は、反乱軍との戦いに連隊が出撃する直前に辞職した英国人将校を描く。彼の友人と婚約者は、辞職を臆病な行為とみなし、臆病者の象徴である4枚の白い羽根を彼に贈るが、実は彼が潜入捜査を行い、名誉挽回を目論んでいたとは知る由もなかった。

今回の英語に関してですが、主人公ヒース・レジャー は主にアメリカの映画界で有名でありウェス・ベントレー やケイト・ハドソンは皆アメリカ出身です。生粋のブリティッシュではないので、ブリティッシュを真似ているせいかリスニングは聞きやすい部類に入ります。
